Truth, Justice, and the Adlerian Way
Truth, Justice, and the Adlerian Way!
This presentation explores how superhero stories and fandoms can be used, through Adlerian theory and Individual Psychology, to better understand clients, promote social interest, and support goal achievement.
Presented by Erica Wassenaar and Connie Victor
To register - https://leapt.arlo.co/w/courses/137-truth-justice-and-the-adlerian-way/685
Details:
Superheroes invoke fond memories of watching blockbuster movies or reading comic books at your local barber shop, images of spandex costumes and witty phrases, and adventures and storylines centered around saving the world. However, these stories, memories, and metaphors can be used to better understand clients and the world through the use of Adler’s ideas and Individual Psychology. This presentation will explore the usefulness of these stories and resources, discuss interventions aimed at promoting social interest and movement toward one’s goals, and apply Adlerian theory to the concepts of superheroes, their fandoms, and the associated pop culture phenomena.

Grief is undeniably one of the most difficult human emotions to heal from. Unresolved grief over the course of one’s lifetime can lead to long term depression, addiction, or other mental health problems. When individuals encounter a significant loss followed by overwhelming experiences of grief, it can become difficult to want to connect with others and embrace life again. As this occurs, the core of one’s human existence, including one’s sense of belonging and contribution, is affected. Adlerian theory is a comprehensive psychology for understanding people and the motivation behind their actions. It also provides an artful approach for working with hurting clients through a relational method of inspiring change. Offering a straight-forward and clear-focused training style for applying Adlerian tactics to grief-stricken individuals, Dr. Bauman will guide helping professionals in their journey of connecting with and motivating hurting individuals to move forward in the midst of their pain.

The Adlerian Network FREE Monthly Meeting
The Adlerian Network FREE Monthly Meeting (at new time) will be on the topic of “Early Recollections & Metaphors in Therapy & Supervision” and be presented by Dr. John Newbauer.
You need not be a member to attend the Adlerian Network. Events are free. Send a request for the Zoom link to <adlerian.network@gmail.com>
Metaphors are powerful ways of working with clients and often are used by our clients to describe their situations, feelings and relationships. Similarly, counselors in supervision also use metaphors to express themselves. Too often, we neglect to hear the metaphors or explore them in ways that are useful. We will take a look at what metaphors are and how we might use them as Adlerians in our work in therapy and supervision.
Our speaker, Dr. John Newbauer, is a consulting psychologist, and supervises behavioral clinicians working with clients who have a variety of developmental disabilities. He served as the Executive Director of the North American Society of Adlerian Psychology (NASAP) and also served as Administrator of ICASSI (International Committee for Adlerian Summer Schools and Institutes). He was Director of Treatment and Diagnostics for the Allen County Juvenile Center. Prior to working for Allen County Juvenile Center, Dr. Newbauer co-founded a private practice group, Phoenix Associates, Inc. in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he practiced psychology for 23 years. He served on the core faculty of the Adler School of Professional Psychology for 18 years and retired in 2008. Dr. Newbauer holds a diplomate from NASAP. He has publications in the areas of working with sexual offenders and victims and also spirituality and mental health.
